Andy Bechhoefer, Principal

Andy joined grassroots solutions in 2000 and oversees targeting, helping campaigns and advocacy organizations use various data to determine how to reach their goals. Targeting these days involves taking data from a variety of sources (election data, census data, voter files, microtargeting models) and applying that data into an actual strategic plan. Almost every project at grassroots solutions is informed in some way by targeting: this might mean writing a field plan for the We Are Ohio campaign, helping the Center for Community Change target a registration program in Arizona, advising friends like Congressman Russ Carnahan on redistricting, or helping an organization like Catalist evaluate their services.

Over the past couple of decades Andy has worked in all corners of progressive politics, starting with the National Committee for an Effective Congress (NCEC), while also working for Democratic Party committees such as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and presidential campaigns such as the Bill Bradley for President Campaign. While working on the Bradley campaign, Andy swears he came up with something similar to the 50-state delegate strategy that Obama actually won with in 2008. When his day job at grassroots solutions is complete Andy can also be seen in the far corner of your HDTV screen helping CNN call races on election night as part of their decision team.

Andy would throw it all away to indulge his true passion of being a general manager of a baseball team, which requires many of the same skills he uses in his day job, such as evaluating players (i.e., voters), researching their performance (statistics = targeting data; scouting reports = polls), and then figuring out how to win the most games within a set budget.
