LIVESTRONG Day 2009

Cancer survivor Lance Armstrong founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) in 1997 to call attention to the suffering caused by cancer and to bring cancer survivors the message that they can LIVESTRONG.

grassroots solutions has worked side-by-side with the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) since 2005, building grassroots momentum and unleashing that momentum to demand change in the way cancer is treated.  As part of this work, LIVESTRONG volunteer leaders across the U.S. have organized local activities to demand that cancer become a national priority.

Recognizing that cancer knows no geographic boundaries, the LAF went global in 2009, making LIVESTRONG Day a global day of action to fight cancer.  grassroots solutions was honored to assist the LAF in this milestone day by:

  • Leveraging the LAF’s Global Cancer Summit in Dublin, Ireland in August of 2009 to feed into the energy of LIVESTRONG Day
  • Integrating LIVESTRONG Day with the LAF’s new global action site: www.livestrongaction.org
  • Advising on the grassroots messaging around a global LIVESTRONG Day
  • Offering strategic guidance on recruiting participation
  • Conceptualizing on-line and off-line tactics for LIVESTRONG Day
  • Identifying and helping develop the tools and the support local volunteers need to be successful
  • Creating the workplan and timeline to execute all aspects of the event
  • Helping craft the corporate participation program
  • Providing week-by-week coaching and troubleshooting in the six months leading up to October 2

The results were historic. 1,127 events took place across all seven continents with the number of events being matched only by their amazing diversity.  From a car wash in the Marshall Islands to a visit from a three-ton elephant seal at the British Antarctic Survey, LIVESTRONG advocates celebrated their commitment to fighting cancer.  In less than one year, the LAF has engaged volunteers, governments, and NGO’s all over the planet in making cancer a global priority…and they’re just getting started.  For more information, check out their global campaign web site at www.livestrongaction.org.
